What is Alabama white sauce?

Alabama white sauce is a BBQ sauce made with a mayonnaise base and a zesty combination of buttermilk, spicy brown mustard, horseradish, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, and spices.

The sauce is tangy, creamy, and utterly addictive.

It is divine on any meat and makes a perfect dipping or salad dressing too.

Prep: 20 Minutes
Cook: 40 Minutes

Ingredients:

The ingredient list may look slightly intimidating at first, but I promise this is a super easy sauce to make!

If it wasn’t clear from the title, you’re going to be making and shredding some chicken.

For this, we used 4 to 5 large boneless skinless chicken breasts.

You can cook more, but we found that this was enough to feed plenty!

You’re also going to want one cup of chicken broth. (water will work fine as well, but you’ll lose some flavor.)

Now that we’ve gone over the chicken, it’s time to really get into the sauce and the required ingredients.

Traditionally, Alabama White Sauce is based on mayonnaise and a few other key ingredients.

It’s not always common, but you can also add buttermilk, which we did.

In addition to those, you’re going to want apple cider vinegar, spicy brown mustard, horseradish, and Worcestershire sauce.

For the dry ingredients, you’ll want salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and granulated sugar.

Since these are sliders, you’ll want some slider buns as well!

For an organized list of ingredients and measurements look below.

  • 4 to 5 large boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup water (or chicken broth)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
  • 2 teaspoons raw horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Slider Buns

Instructions:

Remove chicken from packaging.

Place the boneless skinless chicken breasts into the instant pot.

Add 1 cup of water or chicken broth, preferably chicken broth for added flavor.

Chicken broth makes such a difference in the flavor.

Boneless, skinless, chicken breast can be quite bland on their own.

Place the lid on the instant pot and turn the valve to the sealed position.

Press pressure cook or manual button.

Set cook time for 40 minutes.

This allows the chicken to shred easily from large boneless chicken breasts.

Once the instant pot stops counting release the pressure.

Drain the juice from the pot and shred the chicken.

You’re going to want it fairly finely shredded, they’re going on sliders after all.

I toss the chicken into my kitchen mixer and it shreds it up fast.

You can also shred the chicken by hand. I’m lazy so in the mixer, it goes.

Mix together all the remaining ingredients in a medium bowl for the sauce.

Doing the wet ingredients first is preferable, and then you can adjust the seasoning as desired.

Whisk well making sure there are no noticeable lumps and you have a proper sauce.

Place in fridge until ready to use.

Place chicken on the slider bun and pour the Alabama white sauce over the top and top with the top slider bun.

You can also toss the chicken and sauce together before you put them on the slider buns.

What to serve with Alabama white sauce chicken sliders?

Serve the sliders on their own or with sides.

These sliders are a go-to recipe for fall football tailgating.

Some of the sides we love are coleslaw, air fryer dill pickles, pasta salads, and crockpot cheesy bacon tater tots.

Serve them on King’s Hawaiian slider buns with a side of fresh cold dill pickles and chips.

Don’t forget a little side of sauce for chip dipping!

Final Thoughts

While they may be a slight departure from traditional BBQ sliders, these Alabama White Sauce Chicken Sliders hit the spot just the same.

Personally, we liked the change-up, and I hope you do as well.

The sauce works very well for pulled pork as well, if you’re not the biggest fan of chicken!

If you want to vary up the recipe a little further, you can also substitute Kings Hawaiian Rolls, they add a sweet bit of flavor.

These sliders are amazing on their own as a quick lunch or weeknight dinner but can be taken to a new level when served with the right sides.

Sides are somewhat dependent on the personal tastes of you and your family, so we’ll let you determine what works best!

If you’re looking for some ideas, we have plenty of amazing sides for any kind of dinner, and definitely, some that work amazingly for BBQ sliders.

Regardless of what you want to do with these sliders, we’re confident this recipe will satisfy your needs.

Thank you for checking out this lovely recipe, we hope your family enjoys it as much as ours did!
